Where to Buy American Mahjong Supplies in Arizona: A Beginner's Guide
If you've recently discovered American Mahjong, you're not alone. This classic game has seen an incredible resurgence, bringing together friends, neighbors, and families for fun, strategy, and connection. Whether you're just learning or looking to upgrade your setup, having the right supplies makes all the difference.
At 85 Local in Peoria, Arizona, we've helped hundreds of new players get started. Here's everything you'll need to build your Mahjong collection.
1. A Set of American Mahjong Tiles
The tiles are the heart of the game. American Mahjong uses 152 tiles, including:
- Suits (Bams, Craks, and Dots)
- Winds
- Dragons
- Flowers
- Jokers
When choosing a tile set, look for one that's easy to read, durable, and fits your personal style. Many players enjoy collecting different sets over time, from classic designs to colorful modern styles.
Pro Tip: If you're just starting out, choose a tile set with clear, easy-to-read symbols rather than highly decorative designs.
2. The Official National Mah Jongg League Card
Every year, the National Mah Jongg League releases a new playing card with updated hands. Every player at the table should have the current year's card, as it's the guide you'll use throughout the game.
If you're joining a local group, be sure everyone is using the same edition.
3. Racks and Pushers
A quality rack helps keep your tiles organized while pushers make building the walls much easier.
While they're optional, many players quickly discover they don't want to play without them—especially once they've experienced how much smoother setup becomes.
4. A Mahjong Mat
A table mat helps prevent tiles from sliding, protects your table, and creates a quieter playing experience.
Many mats also include attractive designs that make game night feel a little more special.
5. Tile Bags and Storage Accessories
Keeping everything organized makes it easy to take your Mahjong game anywhere.
Popular accessories include:
- Tile bags
- Rack bags
- Card holders
- Zipper pouches
- Score pads
- Line finders
- Charleston guides
These also make wonderful gifts for the Mahjong player in your life.
6. Learn How to Play
Having beautiful supplies is only part of the experience.
The fastest way to learn is by playing with others.
